Vocational Nursing

The Vocational Nursing Program by Lamar State College Orange at Polk County Center is a block-based program designed to prepare graduates to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN/VN) to be a licensed vocational nurse (LVN). The LVN functions under the direction of a registered nurse and/or licensed physician to provide nursing care to people who need of medical diagnostic evaluation and are experiencing acute or chronic illness. Graduates of the VN Program are currently employed in hospitals, physician's offices, outpatient medical centers, long-term care facilities, and home health agencies. The VN Program is ideal for those who desire careers in nursing, but do not wish to spend two or more years in an educational program.

Licensure Requirements

Texas House Bill 1508

Effective September 1, 2017, HB 1508 amends the Texas Occupations Code Section 53 that requires education providers to notify you, a potential or enrolled student, that a criminal history may make you ineligible for an occupational license upon program completion. The Texas Board of Nursing website provides links to information about the licensing process and requirements.

Should you wish to request a review of the impact of criminal history on your potential license prior to or during your enrollment, you can visit the link above for the possibility of a criminal history evaluation.

This information is being provided to all persons who apply or enroll in the program with notice of the requirements as described above, regardless of whether or not the person has been convicted of a criminal offense.  Additionally, HB 1508 authorizes licensing agencies to require reimbursements when a student fails to receive the required notice.
